Margaret and Bill Fry welcome you to Ploughman's Cottage. Low Farm. MARSH LANE. Nr Chesterfield. Derbyshire. Just 6 miles west of M1 J30

Our cottage is carefully maintained,well planned and very comfortable. There are small shops within half a mile. we have llamas, sheep and our hens will provide your eggs.
We offer a grazing paddock for a horse or pony and there are pleasant rides across the fields to the woodlands of the Moss Valley.
Renishaw Hall home to the Sitwells is less than two miles from the cottage. To the East are Bolsover Castle and Hardwick Hall. Into Nottinghamshire a visit to Clumber Park, Creswell Craggs to learn about the Ice Age and visit the caves, the Major Oak at Edwinstowe or even the dungeons of Nottingham will keep all the family busy.

We have Chesterfield with the Crooked Spire and market stalls, Sheffield's Cathedral, Shops and Botanical Gardens and Rotherham's Magna Centre which is a must for teenagers who will be amazed at the activities on offer.

Within half an hour by car you will be in the Peak District's glorious scenery. Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Castleton and Eyam are not to be missed.
There are Lead mines, caves and panning for gold at Matlock Bath.
All this, plus quiet picnic areas and fantastic walking your holiday will be as busy or restful as you want to make it.

Ploughman's Cottage is all on one level with gardens on three sides. We have wireless free internet connection.

There is parking for three cars within the grounds of the cottage and gates can be closed for safety of children. The south side has a small patio area with seating. There is a sandpit for small children. We have chickens, sheep and llamas. The animals are near enough to see, but not a nuisance to visitors.
The llamas do not spit ! But they do like to be offered a biscuit.
There are several easy walks from the cottage across fields to the lovely Moss Valley. There are lots of places of interest within easy travelling distance. The cottage has large scale maps for discovering the area by car or on foot. Nearby are shops and pubs with larger supermarkets within ten minutes by car.
The Super Tram terminus is 3 miles away and a pleasant way of travelling into Sheffield city centre with a link into Meadowhall.
There are no hidden extras. We would be pleased to do shopping, just send a note and you can pay on arrival.

By Car: From J30 M1 follow A6135 toward Eckington. After 3 miles at the main traffic lights turn left and follow this road up through Eckington. There are several speed cameras. The only main road is signed left to Chesterfield at traffic lights on a small incline. Keep straight on at these lights. After the Total filling station we are the SECOND PROPERTY ON THE LEFT approximately 300 yards after the garage. Turn in off the main road just before the poplar trees. Directions in full will be forwarded with booking details.

By Bus: Travel into Eckington Bus Station from Chesterfield, Sheffield, or Mansfield. There are connecting Services from Airports to the major towns.

By Train: Travel either to Sheffield or Chesterfield Stations. We could arrange to pick you up from the station or if you travel by bus into Eckington we can arrange to collect you from the bus station in Eckington.

By Plane: The nearest airport is East Midlands. Journey time by car to Ploughman's Cottage is approximately 45 minutes.
Manchester Airport is about one and a half hours travel by car. Other possibilities are Birmingham, Leeds Bradford or Luton.

Accommodation

Ploughman's Cottage has two bedrooms. One has a king size sleigh bed,the other has two single beds.
There is a very comfortable folding bed that can be set up in the double bed room. This is usually for the youngest member of the family. We also have a travel cot available.

Our charges for 2009 are as follows

  • £300 per week. This is inclusive of Gas, Electricity, Towels and all bedding.
  • During July and August and at Christmas and New Year the weekly charge is £320
  • Short breaks available out of season.£60 per night one or two nights - £55 each night for 3 or more nights. Please telephone to check availability.

  • Facilities

    We have a paddock available for any visitor who may wish to bring their horse along on holiday. We hope later this year to have stabling available too. There are bridleways and woodland rides nearby.

    Extra Info

    We are three miles away from the Super Tram Terminus. This is an easy way to travel into Sheffield City centre and from there out to Meadowhall.
    Bolsover Castle, Hardwick Hall and Creswell Craggs are all super places for a day out. Nottingham and the Robin Hood Visitor Centre is interesting for children. We have a full brochure available on request.
    There is a regular bus service passing the cottage which links with all major towns in this area.

    Leisure

    The following activities are all within a few miles of the cottage and we are also able to offer a paddock for horse and pony owners who wish to bring along their four legged friends. Good local riding area.

    There is a craft centre at Ridgeway and we recommend a visit to Picture Parade within the craft centre who are stockists for prints by local artist Margaret Clarkson. For further information visit www.pictureparade.co.uk.

    Renishaw Hall and Gardens has been the family home of the Sitwells for nearly 400 years and makes an excellent day out for families as well as garden, history and art enthusiasts. www.sitwell.co.uk

    Food & Drink

    The cottage is well equipped with a double oven gas cooker. Excellent range of kitchen ware, cutlery and crockery. We provide storage boxes and a flask if you take out a picnic.

    Locally there are many pubs serving meals with a wide range of menus and prices. There are also restaurants and garden centre cafes open throughout the day.
